Washington DC region swelters after storm cuts power

Up to two million people are without power after violent storms hit the region around the US capital, Washington DC.

The storms swept across West Virginia, Virginia, Washington and Maryland, with wind speeds of up to 75mph (120 kph). The power outages left many without air conditioning after a day of record-breaking 104F (40C) heat.

The storm is locally referred to as a “derecho” – a violent, straight-lined windstorm associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms.

It left behind felled trees; streets littered with fallen branches and downed power lines.

Addressing hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in Tahrir square on Friday, Egypt’s President-elect Mohamed Morsi pledged everything in his power to enhance the role of the people in political decision-making.

Morsi promised a civil, constitutional state, a modern state and independence from any foreign influence. This was a message intended to reassure those who fear an Islamic power, especially the Christian minority.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania— Jerry Sandusky will reportedly still receive a state pension payment of more than $4,905 per month despite being found guilty last week on 45 molestation charges, according to Pennsylvania law.

Sandusky will get a $59K pension, every year he is locked up. As outrageous as this sounds, it is perfectly legal. The $59,000 payout is reportedly part of his annual state pension for his 30-plus years of service to Penn State.

But a recent analysis by Piper Jaffray makes makes you wonder whether Zooey Deschanel might actually be more intelligent than Siri.

Piper Jaffray tech analyst Gene Munster conducted an exhaustive analysis on the accuracy of Siri’s answers compared to Google’s search results. The analysis rated Google with a B+ (86%) for accuracy of answers, while Siri scored a D (62%) for accuracy.
