Iran is too conservative a Nation and women there have to wear head scarves and veils and follow strict dress codes. Hence, it is unimaginable that Barbie dolls wearing swimwear and dressed in scanty western style dresses be allowed – those are therefore, taboo.

The police have seized stocks of such Barbie dolls held in the shops.

Iran is keen to promote its own brand of dolls – Dara and Sara: these wear traditional Iranian dresses, modest clothes and are trying to inculcate pro-family values but, in spite of these efforts, the popularity of the Barbie dolls cannot be curbed.
