French Foreign Legion soldiers, backed by increasing US logistical support, took mystical Timbuktu on Sunday, scattering the remaining al-Qaida backed rebels seeking to create a new Afghanistan in the desert nation of Mali.

The city is a veritable warehouse of historic sites, and cultural experts from UNESCO have been bemoaning the destruction of such landmarks by the rebels. Saturday, the French military’s website reported the capture of Gao, the last major town held by the Islamists.

The Algerian government told Le Monde it had avoided a catastrophe, making it unclear what their definition of a catastrophe was. The Associated Press reported Sunday that numerous bodies, some burned or disfigured, had been found at the Algerian natural gas facility seized from terrorists. It was not possible to say whether the victims were foreign or local workers.

Al-Jazeera reported that security sources, who changed their story, said Sunday afternoon that five terrorists were captured. AFP said twelve corpses deposited at the morgue were Japanese killed on Wednesday, the day of the attack.

In reaction to Algeria’s authorization for French warplanes to use its airspace for bombing raids against al-Qaida-linked extremists in Mali, a group called the Masked Brigade, linked to Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, attacked a BP gas facility in the town of In Amenas in Algeria’s southeast on Wednesday.
