Former Lawyer of News of World Denies Phone Hacking

Former News of the World head of legal Tom Crone has denied any wrongdoing after his arrest by London police Thursday in the investigation into phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp. and possible attempts to cover it up.

“My client has fully assisted the police in their inquiries,” broadcaster ITV on Friday quoted Crone’s lawyer as saying. “He categorically denies the commission of or involvement in any criminal offense.”  The lawyer said he and Crone wouldn’t comment further. Crone was released on bail until mid-October.

The London Metropolitan police, known as Scotland Yard, on Thursday arrested the 60-year-old, making Crone the 25th person arrested in the hacking probe. Earlier this month, the British Crown Prosecution Service brought phone hacking charges against several former News of the World journalists, including former editor Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks, the former CEO of News Corp.’s U.K. newspaper unit News International.
