Nissan ZEOD RC Le Mans Prototype Revealed

At the world’s biggest motorsport event that is the Le Mans 24 Hours, Nissan unveils its most advanced race car yet. Called the ZEOD RC, it is the fastest electric race car ever made, and it is powered by the same sort of batteries you find in a LEAF.

It seemed before that Nissan wanted to do away with Deltawing on account of their car being too much of an overkill. But with the ZEOD it becomes clear that they had bigger plans all along. The ZEOD RC (Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car) will be tested prior to next week’s big race, to see if it has the potential of competing in the LMP1 class. It is, after all, capable of reaching 300+ km/h.

Of course, a car like this won’t be qualified in any of the categories, and has to compete under the ACO’s “Garage 56″ entry – an additional spot on the grid for vehicles that showcase new and innovative technology.

Nissan did not reveal any technical details about the ZEOD other than the fact that it uses LEAF batteries. This car is actually a testbed for evaluating technologies that can be used in the firm’s future electric cars. Hopefully, it will result in better performing EVs. Electric vehicles that can hold on to their charge longer.

“Nissan has become a global leader in the development of zero emission automotive technology, and the Nissan ZEOD RC will allow us to further develop those capabilities using the toughest endurance race in the world as a mobile test bed to test the potential of our planned LM P1 power train,” said Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President and Executive Committee member at Nissan Motor Company Limited.
